New Zealanders are among the least prepared for retirement, ranking 20th out of 27 OECD countries according to figures from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (2006).

Since 1970 the average period of retirement for Men has increased from 4 years to 22 years, and for Women 8 years to 24 years.
